Commissioner Giles Byrd arrested for larceny

Giles "Buddy" Byrd

BREAKING: County Commissioner Giles “Buddy” Byrd was arrested Friday morning on felony larceny charges.
Byrd, 71, was booked at 9:32 a.m. at the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, and released on $25,000 unsecured bond at 9:49 a.m. after being fingerprinted and photographed.

He was charged with felony larceny and possession of stolen property, according to jail records. Byrd is alleged to have stolen a storage building from Maury Reaves.

The veteran county commissioner — a staunch critic of the sheriff’s office — handily won the democrat nomination for the county commissioner seat he has held for years in the May primary. He faces Republican Ray Battle, a retired Highway Patrol trooper, in the November election. Byrd is an agribusinessman from Hallsboro.

This is a developing story.
