• First Sgt. Josh McPherson and Sgt. Justin Inman of the sheriff’s office were caught doing a good deed in Whiteville on Monday.  A stranded motorist had a flat tire and these two officers stopped to help her despite a busy highway and rather warm weather. Ms. Lori E. was so grateful that she took to Facebook with a picture and many thanks to let the public know that the good guys are still out there. 

“I wish I knew your rank, but today I will call you my heroes or knights in shining armor,” says Ms. Lori. She goes on to say that the officers are appreciated more than they know. 

• A Little Free Library was installed at the Hill’s Food Store in Lake Waccamaw over the weekend. It contains free books for any child that needs a book, but please be sure to return a title or put a new one in to help keep it stocked. 

• A celebration of the state fruit, the Muscadine grape, is set to take place on Sept. 25 this year. The event features a wide variety of contest to participate in, and wineries in North Carolina are invited to show off their sparkling finest. There will be music, crafts, food, and of course, wine. The music line up for the festival includes The Antique Outlaws, North Tower Band, and The Catalinas. The event also includes a tailgating decorating contest. Joal Smith and his Grand Rental Group have held the winner’s circle for the contest the last five years running. The winner will receive a ribbon, a bottle of wine, and a free tailgate space for the following year’s festival.

There will also be a wine contest, and entries will be accepted at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24 at the Duplin County Cooperative Extension in Kenansville. Winners will be displayed during the Muscadine Festival at the Duplin Events Center on Saturday, Sept. 25. • The Christian Fellowship Church in Hallsboro will be welcoming senior citizens to attend an event sponsored by the Faith Soldiers Empowerment Center. The Senior Breakfast and Wellness Program will take place Sunday Sept. 26 from 7:30 a.m.- 9:30 a.m. The FSEC senior wellness project combines their traditional food service programs with new health and wellness services. The event is free, and the church is located at 5662 Sam Potts Highway. 

• A fun-filled Women’s Adventure Day is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Bummin’ Hole Lodge. The cost will be $10 per person, and ladies of all ages are invited to attend. There will many activities available to participate in including hatchet throwing, fishing, skeet shooting, archery, and pistol shooting. All equipment will be provided at the lodge except fishing poles and tackle. Bait will be provided on site.

Special guest speaker will be Mrs. Tammy Weeks. You can sign up for the Women’s Adventure Day by calling the CBA office at 910.642.2155. Spots are filling up for the event so call and reserve yours before the Oct. 1 deadline. The Bummin’ Hole Lodge is located at 318 Home Harrelson Road in Whiteville. 

• The Columbus County Agricultural Fair is scheduled for Oct. 12-17. The pandemic put a damper on things for last year’s fair, but staff are hopeful this year will go off without a hitch. The fair committee wants the public to know they are working diligently to assure the safety of the public, and the safety of all the vendors, and midway personnel. 

• The N.C. State Fair will be held Oct. 14-24. Adult admission is $8 for ages 13-64, and youth is $4 for ages 6-12. This is the lowest price of the year due to the Covid 19 pandemic. You can find more information at www.NCSTATEFAIR.ORG

• The Second Annual Hunter Lewis Memorial Bike Ride Show will take place Oct. 16 starting from 1 p.m. until. There will be vendors on site, BBQ plates for sale, beverages, a cornhole tournament, raffles, and door prizes. All proceeds from the show will benefit the Cue Center for Missing Persons. • A seasonal favorite of the spooky kind is set to open once again for the fall. Nightmares Haunted Trail located at 7027 Seven Creeks Highway in Nakina will open to the public Oct. 17-18, 24-25, 29-31 and Nov. 1. You can come out and take a stroll through the madness from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. Tickets are $12.
