Retired State Trooper Scott Floyd said today (Friday) that he plans to throw his hat in the ring for the District Seven county commissioner seat next spring.

“I have some goals, if I am elected,” Floyd said. “We need to get some good jobs and good businesses here, so our young people will stay home. We need quality development with good paying jobs.”

Floyd is the second Republican hopeful to announce a bid for the seat currently held by Charles McDowell. Ronald Gore, who served on the county board from 2006-2010, made his plans public earlier this week. Gore has changed parties from Democrat to Republican.

Floyd, who lives in the Pleasant Plains community, is currently a bailiff with the sheriff’s office. He worked for the Department of Corrections for eight years, then spent 20 as a State Highway Patrol Trooper. He said he “a little nervous” but excited about his first run for public office.

“I thought about it, talked with some people, and prayed about it,” Floyd said. “I feel like it’s the right thing to do. I have a lot to learn, but people have said they’ll support me.”

Floyd said he is willing to work with others, but he is still “an individual thinker.

“I can listen to other people’s opinions, and I respect them,” he said. “It’s good to hear what other people think. I have an open mind. I want to work with everyone if I can, but at the end of the day I am going to do what I think is best.”

Floyd said he is not a “public speaker.

“I can talk to anybody, but I’m not real good with big crowds,” Floyd laughed. “I guess that’s one thing I am going to have to learn.”
