The water is high, and the weather is warm. Events in the county are happening all over the place, so how about a little fishing to add to the mix. 

The second annual Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio Yacunne Fish Camp is fast approaching, and now is the time to register. The dates for the event are April 22-23 and April 29-30. To sign up online, visit https://forms.gle/32x1T1gzB2Gxr3KG7.

Columbus County Sheriff’s Office held a retirement ceremony on March 24 for Captain Dawn Battle. Battle began her law enforcement career in 1991. She worked for Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Methodist University, Wackenhut Security, and then found her home in Columbus County.

Battle dedicated 12 years of service to Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.  She and her husband Ray, a retired Highway Patrol Trooper, own Comfort Creek Farms on Red Hill Road.

The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce is currently looking for food vendors for the Spring Has Sprung Festival on April 23. Those interested are asked to contact the GTCCC office at 910.377.3012. 

Spring Into Science is Saturday, April 2, at the Museum of Natural Science in Whiteville. From 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., kids can dig for fossils, observe pollinators at work, and check out the labs at the museum. Every child who completes a series of activities gets a book as well. The Food Ministry has been helping area residents for ten years.

The Lake Waccamaw Food Ministry celebrated 10 years of service to the community last week. The ministry provides area residents in need with bagged food each month via a drive-thru pick up at the Lake Waccamaw First Baptist Church. This church, along with the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, Little Wheel of Hope, and the Boys and Girls Home all provide supplies and volunteers to fuel the campaign. 

The Rivertown Riders Motorcycle Club visited the Vietnam Veterans Wall when it visited Whiteville last week.

Last weekend, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on Madison Street received some visitors from out of town. The Rivertown Riders of Holden Beach rode their motorcycles to Whiteville to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the war. The non-profit organization rides for charity to give back to the community.  

The Brown Street Station in Chadbourn will be hosting Legends Dueling Pianos on Saturday, April 2 at 7 p.m. The sing-a-long dancing show will feature piano man Johnny Stone and multi-talented Becca Bongiorno. The H.E.A.R.T.S. Foundation will be having a stoplight fundraiser drive in downtown Chadbourn on Saturday, April 2, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will go toward education projects and the school supply drive this summer.  

The Columbus Christian Academy will host its annual spring auction and dinner on April 2 at 5 p.m. The proceeds from the event raised this year will be for new playground and outdoor equipment. Individual tickets are $15, and family tickets are $40 for up to five immediate family members. Free childcare will be available for children ages 3-10 years old.  

The East Columbus FFA barbecue plate sale and plant sale is Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at East Columbus High School. Plates are $8, and plant prices vary. All proceeds go to the Future Farmers of America program.

Transformation Church will hold a yard sale and chicken bog plate sale Saturday, April 2. The sale starts at 8 a.m. at 9955 U.S. 701 South, Whiteville, just a half mile north of Williams Township school. There will be a wide variety of new and used items of all kinds, as well as some unusual pieces. All proceeds go to the church building fund.

Lake Waccamaw Police Officer Jeff Marlowe added owl wrangling to his job description Thursday. A neighbor found an injured owl in Wooded Acres, and asked Marlowe for help. The officer tracked down a local wildlife rehabilitator, but the bird was apparently just stunned, and flew off before the rescuer arrived.

Mission Serve and their 150 teenagers are returning to Columbus County again this summer. They will be housed at the Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw for the week. Rev. Dave Heller of the Columbus Baptist Association is in need of a few nurses, EMTs, and paramedics who could volunteer as First Aid coordinators from June 25-July 2. 

Two coordinators and a few others will be needed to roam around from site to site as needed. If you would be willing to volunteer to help out even for a small portion of the week, please contact the CBA office at 910.642.2155. You must be an RN, certified EMT, or paramedic to fill the position.
