Columbus County will be pulling out all the stops for area veterans this month. From the Veteran’s Memorial Park to Lake Waccamaw’s Cruise for a Cause, all the branches of the military will be honored during May. 

There will be a barbeque plate sale at the veteran’s building on Madison Street in Whiteville on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The cost is $8 each, and the meal will include barbeque, chips, a beverage, and slaw.  


The Veteran’s Memorial Park of America will be having their veteran’s luncheon on Friday, May 27, at the Columbus County fairgrounds. The meal will begin at 5 p.m. is free to all veterans. Guests may attend for $5 each. There will be a gun raffle for a Howa .308 and a Savage .270 rifle. The annual Lake Waccamaw Cruise for a Cause golf cart parade will be on Sunday, May 29, at 3 p.m. The theme this year is military, and proceeds from the event will be going to various veterans’ organizations. There will be a $100 award for the best decorated golf cart, and t-shirts can be ordered now for $20. Orders must be paid in full in advance. The Children’s Museum of Wilmington will be presenting Family Farm Day on Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. at Galloway Farm. Farmer Alma’s Augmented Farm Animals will be hiding for you to find, visit with, learn facts about, and even take a picture with. The venue is located at 370 Artesia Road in Hallsboro. Chadbourn Elementary School recently held their D.A.R.E program graduation. Jocelyn Johnson and Kensey Mendez won the awards for top essay.  

Learn the basics of bee biology, hive equipment, seasonal management, pests, and diseases this summer at Southeastern Community College. Classes start on July 14 at 6 p.m. at the Cartrette Building. Another Columbus County Sheriff’s Office member went out of his way to help a furbaby’s family last week. Deputy D. Bost stopped on 701 in Tabor City around 9 p.m. to let a resident know her dog had been hit and that he had gotten the injured animal out of the road. Because of the officer’s quick actions, the dog was able to get emergency treatment and lived.  

Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will be having their annual luncheon on Thursday, May 19, at the Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $20, and seats are limited. This year Angelina’s Pizzas will be serving chicken alfredo, lasagna, salad, and strawberry shortcake. There will be a door prize and raffles for many items donated to the museum by area residents and businesses. To make your reservation, call 910.646.1992.  

Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue organization, is building a 56-acre big cat sanctuary located in Fair Bluff. They are in need of volunteers to help with the construction of den boxes and installation of perimeter fencing, top railing and kickers on several big cat and wolf habitats on Saturday, May 21, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Whiteville City Schools personnel dropped by the Whiteville Police Department last week and surprised officers with two large flats of strawberries. The WPD has lost two brothers in blue recently, and the gift was a very kind gesture.
