Drug Suspect Dies After Fleeing Traffic Stop

A Whiteville drug suspect who fled a traffic stop died in a South Carolina hospital.

Christopher Wilson, 41, died June 28, the day after he was arrested on narcotics charges, according to the sheriff’s office.

Wilson and another man were the subject of a traffic stop in the area of Baldwin Circle and Virgil Street, the CCSO said in a release. The second suspect did not run. Wilson allegedly fled on foot, and was captured near Maultsby Drive and Lewis Street.

Wilson had two knives narcotics and baggies with drug residue on his person, the CCSO said.

“Wilson complained of being hot and was given water and then placed in a patrol vehicle with air conditioning.,” the CCSO said in a press release. “While in the vehicle, Wilson became ill and unresponsive.”

Investigators called for an ambulance, and administered Narcan to prevent a drug overdose, the release said. Investigators began performing CPR on Wilson while waiting for the ambulance. He was given a second dose of Narcan and taken to Columbus Regional, then airlifted to a South Carolina hospital. He died there the next day.

Sheriff Jody Greene said in the release that the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office extends heartfelt condolences to Wilson’s family and loved ones.

“Narcotics continue to claim lives in our county and its past time to put an end to narcotics sales of all kinds,” Greene said. “Whether someone sells a penny’s worth or a million dollars’ worth, we will continue to arrest the dealers and let them have their day in court. “
