Suspect Shoots Self During Warrant Service

A Fair Bluff man reportedly shot himself Tuesday when a deputy went to his Fair Bluff home with an order for arrest.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy made contact with Tony Tant, 53, at his Conway Road home around 3 p.m. The deputy was there to serve an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Tant told the deputy he needed to lock an outbuilding, according to the report, and shot himself with a handgun while securing the building.

The deputy called for assistance and performed emergency first aid, but Tant was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office did not release why Tant was being sought by law enforcement. The incident is under investigation.
