Teacher Fired for Alleged ‘Relationship’ with Student

A teacher at Classical Charter Schools of Whiteville was fired Wednesday for what school officials described as “an inappropriate relationship with a student.”

The action was taken Wednesday morning, November 1, by Headmaster Dawn Ivey said today (Friday) that the teacher was terminated “promptly” after an investigation involving the student’s parents and local law enforcement.

“There is no indication that any other student or employee was involved,” Ivey said in a press release.

“We can’t tell you how disappointed we are in this former employee’s behavior,” Ivey said, “which not only violated our trust and that of CCS-Whiteville parents, but runs counter to the pledge taken by all Classical Charter School of America employees and students to always act in an appropriate manner.

Classical Charter Schools has an elementary campus and middle school campuses north of Whiteville, and draws students from across the region. The incident is the first of its kind reported. The news release did not say which school the student attended, or if the child is still in school there.

“Nothing is more important to us than the emotional and physical well-being of our students,” Ivey said. “We acted immediately to notify both the parents and law enforcement officials and terminated the employee without hesitation.”

No further details can be released, Ivey said.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.
