An argument between a tenant at a motel and a clerk led to a charge of destroying mail Tuesday.

Jamaine Thompson, 34, who listed a Fayetteville address on court documents, was charge with a single count of unauthorized opening, reading, or publishing sealed letters. He was released on a $1,500 unsecured bond.

Deputies were called to the Holiday Motel in North Whiteville just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the report. Thompson was in a “verbal altercation” with the property owner, whose name was not listed on the report.

Thompson is alleged to have opened the motel’s mailbox, retrieved a closed envelope containing a check for $2,524, and set the check on fire. The check was in payment for Thompson’s rent, the report said.
