Wreck Leads to Shots Fired, Suicide

A single vehicle crash led to a standoff and an apparent suicide Monday on Country Club Road near Whiteville.

The sheriff’s office said the victim, who was 53, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies were called to the 100 block of Country Club Road around 8:40 p.m. after a call to 911 about a wreck.

“A concerned neighbor reported hearing loud noises and seeing a truck that had crashed near a residence,” the sheriff’s office reported.

Major B. High of the CCSO saw the truck crashed near the home, and a man standing nearby. The individual reportedly ran behind the residence, the report said.

“A gunshot was heard close to the major’s location,” the report said, and High returned to his vehicle and called for backup. The individual returned to his vehicle when the Highway Patrol arrived, the report said, and refused multiple commands to exit the vehicle.

“After several minutes of negotiation, deputies heard a single gunshot followed by the sound of shattering glass,” the report said.

The county’s armored vehicle was used to escort deputies closer to the suspect vehicle. The victim was found inside, and pronounced dead on the scene.

“The Sheriff’s Office detectives are handling the investigation, and the Highway Patrol has completed a report on the vehicle accident,” CCSO Spokesperson Jenna Jalving said in a press release. “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time.”
