Shootings Hurt Three;  Investigations Continuing

Four people were shot, one critically, separate shooting incidents in Columbus County over the weekend.

All of the incidents are under investigation.

The sheriff’s office said deputies were called to 24119 Peacock Road, near Tabor City, after a female was shot in her bedroom Saturday around 4:34 p.m. Deputy S.A. Lee reported that four people were inside the home when someone opened fire, striking the home and a Nissan automobile. Damages were estimated at $1,500.

Chasity Smith, 18, was transported to Columbus Regional. She was in her bedroom when she was hit by gunfire. Her injuries were not life threatening.

Shaquanta Billing, Malesha McCray and Charles Smith were also in the home, but were not injured.

On Sunday, deputies were called to 2747 Baldwin Rd., Whiteville around 4:23 a.m. to a report of a shooting. Noah Grayson Webb, 23,and Lataysha Mason, 28, were in a building on the property when they were shot. Mason was grazed across the back of her neck by a bullet, and Webb was struck in the face, He is in intensive care in New Hanover Novant. No suspects have been identified in the case.

In a third incident, Roger Dale Cartrette, 71, was unlocking his door Monday just after 10 p.m. when someone shot him from a ditch at his 286 Williams Road home, according to a report by Deputy A. Dehne.

The victim told investigators he was robbed of a large quantity of cash during the assault. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
