Here’s today’s Bottom Line

The great heat wave of 2026 for two more days.

As of the time of this writing, heat advisories are pinned to the coastal counties… but I’m guessing the advisories will be expanded farther inland. No matter what, it’s going to continue to be very hot today and tomorrow.

Thunderstorm chances are very low… but not zero… for today. With all kinds of instability in place, all we need is something to spark some lift. Any storm that comes together will be capable of producing intense rainfall, gusty winds, and prolific amounts of lightning.

Sunshine, heat, and afternoon storms on Saturday. The high pressure ridge responsible for the heat wave of the past 2 weeks will “flatten” and then shift far to the west. Increased moisture (more humidity, because why not) will bump heat index values into the advisory criteria once again, even if our actual air temps are lower. Storms should have a bit more areal coverage, and once again they could be on the strong side.

A cold front (a big, beautiful cold front) drops south over the area on Sunday, clearing the area by later in the afternoon. Even after the frontal passage, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are on the agenda throughout the day on Sunday. These storms are even more likely to pack some punch.

Rainfall amounts are looking decent… but when it comes to the drought… will amount to a teaspoon of sand on the beach. Areas that receive storms could pick up several inches of rain, possibly some localized flooding as well.

Shower and thunderstorm chances continue Sunday night into Monday before coming to an end. High pressure builds in for the middle of next week with seasonably hot temperatures.

DROUGHT MONITOR UPDATE — The drought is worsening across the area. Portions of Brunswick county are now under “exceptional” drought.
