One of the noisiest events of the year will take place in Hallsboro on Nov. 18.
The Carolina Youth Challenge 2023 is sponsored by the Columbus County Coon Hunters, Coastal Coonhunters and Twin State Coon Club. The event is free for all youth hunters.
Raccoon hunting was once both a means of financial support and recreation for many rural families. Coon hides were in high demand until the 1980s, and coon meat graced many farm tables in the form of hash, roast or barbecue.
Most modern coon hunters rarely actually harvest their quarry, instead just enjoying the thrill of the chase behind their favorite hounds. With the loss of lands for hunting, the lack of demand for furs, and other recreational opportunities, coon hunting is considered by some to be a dying sport.
Local hunters are trying to change that, by introducing more young hunters to traditional coon hunting.
The Youth Challenge gives both experienced and inexperienced coon hunters the chance to test their skills against other young hunters. Loaner dogs are even available for youth who have never hunted, or don’t own their own hounds.
The event is held annually at the Old 74 Fox Preserve in Hallsboro. Events include a treeing contest at 1 p.m., YEP dog care class at 2:30 p.m., bench show at 3:30 p.m., squalling contest at 3:30 p.m., and a nite hunt starting at 7 p.m.
Food and snacks are available for kids throughout the day for free. Parents are asked to consider a donation. A variety of hunting suppliers will be on hand.
The entire event is free to participants.
