County commissioners approved plans to demolish two flood damaged properties Monday.
The funding is coming from a state Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) recovery grant.
Finesse Builders of Red Springs was the lowest of four bidders, at $20,700 for both properties. The homes are located at 413 Angelo Circle and 214 W. Walter St., Whiteville. Although the homes are in the city limits, the program is being managed by the county through the Adams Company engineers and architects.
Both homes were severely damaged in the flooding from Hurricane Florence. The properties are among a series of homes facing demolition and buyout.
Four firms bid on the demolition projects. Straight Up Excavation bid $42,037; Barfield Backhoe, $23,324; and Four Seasons Demo, $50,600.
Commissioner Giles “Buddy” Byrd asked County Manager Eddie Madden for clarification on who would pay the landfill tipping fees for disposing of the debris from the properties. Madden said the fees would be charged to the grant fund.
