Five deputies have been restored to patrol duty as an investigation into a shooting continues.
Henry Allen Zartman, 66, of South Carolina, died in the 10:45 p.m. incident, according to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Zartman was shot multiple times in a gunfight with deputies responding to a domestic disturbance on Seven Creeks Highway.
Deputies Alex Meeks, Timmy Inman, Zachary Moody, Taylor Hammonds and part-time deputy Franklin Blanton returned to duty Monday, according to the sheriff’s office. All five were on administrative leave while the case was being investigated.
Zartman allegedly went to the home of a former girlfriend, Sandy Tolsch, in Nakina around 10:20 p.m. on May 15, according to the sheriff’s office. Two other adults were in the house at the time. Tolsch called 911 for am domestic disturbance, which was upgraded to a shots fired call after Zartman and at least one person inside the home exchanged gunfire.
Deputies arrived approximately 25 minutes later. Neighbors reported hearing someone being ordered to drop a weapon just before what was described as a dozen or more shots rang out. Zartman was shot multiple times by at least one deputy.
Photos of Zartman’s pickup truck provided by his daughter, Emily Allebach, show bullet holes in the body, windshield and tires, but it is unclear if the damage came before or after he allegedly pointed a firearm at deputies.
A spokesperson for the SBI said the investigation is ongoing.
