While it won’t likely be a major tropical storm, a storm system near the Bahamas could bring badly needed rain to the area Thursday into the weekend.
The National Weather Service said today that a storm system several hundred miles east of the Bahamas is entering an area conducive to development as the season’s first tropical system. If the storm develops before a similar system in the Gulf of Mexico, it will be called Alberto.
The system will move to the west-northwest over the next few days, the NWS said, and could approach the southeastern U.S. coast Thursday or Friday. The system has a 30 percent chance of development in the next week.
While it is unlikely the system will become a tropical depression or storm – much less a hurricane — the storm could bring heavy rains across the region. Emergency officials are monitoring the storm’s progress.
