After almost a year, the Hallsboro Middle School Courthouse annex will close June 30.
“Effective June 30, the Hallsboro Court Facility currently being held at Hallsboro Middle School will be closed,” Clerk of Superior Court Jess Hill said. “All Court past this date will be moved back to the Columbus County Courthouse Annex located at 113 Courthouse Square, Whiteville.”
The courthouse annex was the first of its kind in the state. Beginning in July, one two two sessions of court were held at Hallsboro daily. Thousands of district court, child support and other cases were cleared that would have been delayed due to the lack of social distancing ability in the courthouse annex.
Hill praised the team efforts of county schools, government and the bar to make the shift to Hallsboro as smooth as possible. Midway through the pandemic, Hill noted that staff of the clerk’s office essentially had to operate two courthouses, with one that had to be packed up and returned to Whiteville every day.
