The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is in shock after a newly sworn-in detention officer die two hours into his first tour of duty.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was sworn into at a formal ceremony Monday with several other new hires at the CCSO. In a press release, the sheriff’s office said he apparently suffered a “sudden and severe” medical emergency.
“Our staff responded immediately and did everything within their power while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical services,” the press release said. “Upon arrival, rescue personnel transported the individual to Columbus Regional. Despite the valiant efforts of the medical team, the individual sadly passed away.
“The entire Columbus County Sheriff’s Office family is grieving this heartbreaking and unexpected loss. We share in the sorrow of the family and extend our deepest condolences during this unimaginably difficult time.”
“When someone raises their hand and takes the oath to serve, they become part of our family,” Sheriff Bill Rogers said in the release. “Today, we experienced a profound and painful loss—one that words cannot fully capture. We pray for comfort for the family and loved ones of this brave individual, and we grieve with them. Though their time with us was far too short, they will forever be part of our family.”
