Chadbourn Police have charged a Lumberton man who allegedly struck an officer, kicked him and fled the scene of a collision.
Jaden Rashad Southern. 19, of 301 Spruce St., Lumberton, was held under $21,000 secured bond, according to detention center records. He faces charged of property damage, fleeing to elude arrest, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting, two counts of hit and run, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Chadbourn Police reported that Southern allegedly fought with a Chadbourn officer during a traffic stop, kicking the officer and striking him with the mirror of his vehicle as he sped away. Southern also was involved in a collision on Princess Street where he damaged another person’s vehicle, and fled the scene. Southern fled police at speeds of more than 15 miles per hour over the limit, according to warrants.
Southern had a small quantity of marijuana on his person when he was arrested.
The officer involved in the incident was not seriously injured, Chief Ken Elliot said.
The assault was the first of two involving suspects fleeing traffic stops in Chadbourn that day. A suspect is still at large after fleeing from Officer Grady Corder, causing a collision on U.S. 74 that injured the officer and a bystander.
