Fire Danger Increases

State Forest Service officials issued a red flag warning for fire conditions across the entire state Sunday.

No burn bans have been issued locally, but fire officials are discouraging any type of outdoor burning due to the dry conditions.

Strong gusty winds, warm temperatures, extremely low humidity and a rainfall deficit have created prime conditions for major wildfires, the N.C. Forest Service (NCFS) said in a press release.

November is typically one of the busiest times of the year for wildfires.

Debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina, the NCFS said. Leaves, pine straw, limbs and dry grass can easily lead to embers that can fly in strong winds and start fires elsewhere. Debris fires can also quickly get out of control and spread to woods, fields and even structures.
