A Chadbourn Police sergeant is recovering from serious injuries sustained while using Stop Sticks on a chase suspect Thursday.
Mayor Phillip Britt said Fair Bluff Police were attempting to stop a vehicle identified as part of an incident in South Carolina. The suspect allegedly fled, reaching speeds of 130 miles per hour on U.S. 76.
Chadbourn Police deployed Stop Sticks (a tire deflation device) at the intersection of N.C. 410 and 76, Britt said in a press release.
“The suspect tried to avoid the Stop Sticks and debris from the Stop Sticks struck Chadbourn Police Sergeant Johnathan Driggers, causing severe injuries,” Britt said.
Driggers was transported by a deputy to Columbus Regional, then airlifted to Duke Hospital for emergency surgery. He was released today, but is still recovering, Britt said.
The suspect is not in custody, Britt said. His name and probable charges have not been released due to the ongoing investigation.
