Quarry Road Fire Burning Familiar Ground

A wildfire in Brunswick County is causing visible smoke in eastern and southern Columbus, and it’s in a familiar place.

Brunswick County Emergency Services said the Quarry Road II fire is burning in the same area as the massive wildfire that hit the area in July. Approximately 50 acres are affected in the Bricklanding and Old Georgetown Road area near Shallotte.

The N.C. Forest Service and local fire departments are on scene. Official containment numbers have not been released yet today.

Some areas were briefly evacuated Thursday night, but residents were given the all-clear a few hours later. Heavy smoke and emergency traffic continue in the area.

Residents of Lake Waccamaw, Bolton and elsewhere may see heavy smoke toward the Green Swamp today.

SD Hardee Consulting will be conducting a burn for future tree planting in part of the Green Swamp. The location is southeast of the intersection of Camp Branch Road and N.C. 211. “This is a large burn and smoke will be visible from a significant distance,” the firm said in a social media post.

Smoke will be visible from U.S. 74 east of Bolton.

“The Forest Service and the 911 Center are aware and we remain in communication with them throughout the day,” Hardee said.
