April 15, 11:10 a.m. update: The victim has been identified as Elbert Vereen, 20, of Chadbourn.
The sheriff’s office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday night.
The body of Elbert Vereen was reported just after 8:30 p.m. in a field off Clyde Norris Road, in the Jamaica Queens community near Tabor City.
Gregory Kim Robinson, 52, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with resisting an officer, intoxicated and disruptive behavior, and possession of marijuana. He was held under a $2,000 bond. Kim gave a Grice Road address on jail documents.
Several hours later, a Miller Road home was damaged by gunfire. The call came in to Columbus County 911 at 12:31 a.m. It is not known if the incidents are related.
The killing was the second in the county this year.
