Head-on proves fatal for Riegelwood man

Traffic was tangled on N.C. 87 near Sandyfield Monday when a van crossed the centerline and collided with a loaded logging truck, killing the van driver.

Dennis Emmett Carver of Riegelwood was dead on the scene, according to Trooper B.T. Worriax of the Highway Patrol. Carver was headed west on N.C. 87 near Narrow Gap Road, roughly 1/8 mile from N.C. 11, when his van crossed the centerline. The crash occurred around 1:45 p.m.

Darya Letitia Pittman of Evergreen was operating the eastbound logging truck. She was transported to New Hanover Regional. Her condition was not immediately available.

Acme-Delco-Reigelwood Fire-Rescue and the Highway Patrol responded to the crash.

The death was the 14th on Columbus County roads this year. The last fatality occurred July 26, when a Kentucky woman was killed in a head-on collision near Tabor City.
