An officer at Columbus Correctional Institution was assaulted this morning by an inmate, according to a prison spokesman.
The officer, a 17-year veteran, was transported for medical attention, according to Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) Spokesman Brad Deen. The assault occurred at 10:45 a.m. when the offender struck the officer, causing him to fall and cut his head, Deen said. The officer was alert when he was taken to Columbus Regional.
The Whiteville Police Department is investigating. The Department of Public Safety will seek charges and is fully cooperating with the investigation. An internal investigation has been launched as well, Deen said.
