Seasoned hunters have something to shoot about this year, and it can last a lifetime for those who are 50-69 years old.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission made some legislative decisions recently, and they are now offering a new Lifetime Sportsman License and a Unified Sportsman License beginning Oct. 21. The licenses were created with older hunters and fishermen in mind, and will be half the price of the Adult Sportsman and the Unified Sportsman.
“The new lifetime licenses are for North Carolina residents only,” says Mindy Wharton, Public Relations Manager for NCWRC.
Though the licenses are not available on the NCWRC’s Alvin website, the estimated cost will be $265 for the Lifetime Sportsman for 50 and older and $358 for the Unified Sportsman 50 and older.
Others changes are taking place to include first responders in North Carolina. The half-priced lifetime licenses that are available to volunteer firefighters will be extended to volunteer rescue and EMS members. These licenses cannot be purchased through agents due to the proper certification needed to obtain them, but those interested can call 1.888.248.6834 for more information.
A veteran’s exemption was created for both residents and non-residents who fish in Mountain Heritage Trout Waters.
The license is no longer required for veterans who were honorably discharged and who wish to fish in these specified waters. This is not considered a free license, but only an exemption to the rules. The NCWRC requires those who qualify to carry proper valid documentation of their service while they are fishing. The exemption will come into effect Oct. 1.
Lastly in the new laws passed, bear hunters who harvest a black bear will be required to submit at least one premolar from the animal to the Wildlife Commission no later than Jan. 31 after the season ends.
