Yet another roundabout could be coming to a Columbus County intersection.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is considering constructing a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 130/U.S. 74-76 business – commonly called the Chadbourn Highway – and Peacock Road. DOT is currently accepting public comments online about the proposal. If it is approved, the project will be built in 2023.

The state has already converted the crossroads to a four-way stop to help improve safety, Andrew Barksdale of the DOT said. Four-ways are considered interim measures for larger improvement projects.

A 2020 study by the DOT found roundabouts reduced total crashes by 41 percent — and fatal and injury crashes by 79 percent — after they were installed at 13 locations that have a 55 mile per hour limit, Barksdale said.
