Lots of good news and family fun are going on this week in the county, and folks are looking forward to getting out and about to take advantage of it.  

• The Classic Charter Schools of Whiteville announced their 2021-2022 Teachers of the Year this week. These recipients are dedicated to student success. They bring out the best in their learners and inspire them to strive for greatness.

Teacher of the Year went to Nora Gail Terry. Beginning Teacher of the Year is Jennifer Orders, and Teacher Assistant of the Year Ytonia Taylor.

• Abundant Life Assembly of God will be having a yard sale Saturday, Oct. 9 from 8 a.m.-until. It will be held inside the Family Life Center. The church is located at 5384 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.  

• The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina will be hosting their 2021 Alumni Reunion Oct. 9. The event will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the BGHNC Pavillion. There will be kid’s games, awards, and lunch provided by Ricky Creech. Come out and catch up with old friends, meet some new friends, and have some fun and fellowship.  

• The District 31 Haunted Trail 2021 will take place every weekend on Friday and Saturday nights through October. Admission is $15 per person, and the trail is open from 7 p.m.-10 p.m.  Call 910.287.3030 or visit www.grissettownfire.com for more information. The event is hosted by Grissettown Longwood Fire and Rescue Department located at 758 Longwood Road in Ocean Isle Beach.

• Firefighters from Station 13 and 18 celebrated Fire Prevention Week with students at the Williams Township Elementary School. Recently. The kids got to learn about fire safety and being a volunteer firefighter. Thanks to Roseland Volunteer Fire Department and all our departments for everything you do. 

• The Columbus County Board of Education will have their next meeting on Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. The location of the meeting will be announced closer to the date of the meeting.  

• There was some excitement at the fairgrounds Wednesday when a two-inch water line ruptured. The line was quickly repaired by David Creech assisted by Brent Watts, Dwayne Barnes, and “Mr. Columbus County Fair” himself, Mack Ward.

A broken water line at the fair grounds led to some emergency repairs last week.

  • The Columbus County Agricultural Fair will be from Oct. 12-17. The COVID pandemic put a damper on things for last year’s fair, but staff are hopeful this year will go off without a hitch. Admission $8 which includes gate admission, exhibits, live entertainment, livestock shows, and all contests. Wristbands are $20, the Demolition Derby is $3, Admission for ages 5 and under is free. Thursday is 1/2 price night with admission $4 and wristbands $16.  

Carload Sunday is also back this year. Gates will open at 1 pm with prices $40 per carload. Please note there are to be no buses and that all those in the vehicle are required to have access to a seatbelt.

Upon entering the fairground parking, each driver will receive a number representing the number of people in their vehicle. When going through the gate, the driver will show their number and each person of the group will receive entrance to the fair including a wristband. 

The fairgrounds are located at 886 Prison Camp Road in Whiteville.
