Two services honoring veterans will be held in Columbus County tomorrow (Thursday) as part of Veterans Day observances.
At 9 a.m., the Veterans Memorial Park will host a special service honoring service members and commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A special garden will be dedicated at the park in honor of those who died in battle and were never identified.
At 11 a.m., the county will host a Veterans Day event on the steps of the Courthouse.
Columbus County Public Transportation will be offering a free ride to veterans to this event. To schedule a time for pickup call 910.642.7201.
The park will also host Honoring Our Veterans In their Mission on Nov. 20 at the fairgrounds. The evening will include a steak dinner, silent auction, raffles, and entertainment by the Blackwater Band. Tickets are $50, and may be purchased from any park volunteer or at the Columbus County News and WTXY office at 1015 S. Madison St., Whiteville.
Veterans Day commemorates the end of World War I. Fighting ceased on Nov. 11, 1918, at 11:11 a.m. The day honors all veterans who survived wartime service.
