Late Night Chase Makes Round Trip

Lightbar on a car

Pursuit of a fleeing suspect led deputies from Whiteville to Hallsboro and back again just before midnight Wednesday.

Brandon Lee Lewis, 39, faces multiple charges including fleeing to elude arrest, driving while impaired, failure to yield, damage to government property, and assault on a law enforcement officer after the chase. He was held under a secured bond.

The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were on routine patrol when Lewis was spotted driving near the intersection of Washington and Lee streets at 11:48 p.m. When the deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop, Lewis allegedly sped west on Washington Street.

The report said Lewis turned in at the parking lot of a convenience store at Powell Boulevard and Washington, then pulled back onto Washington heading east. His Ford Ranger pickup struck a deputy’s patrol car in the rear fender as he pulled out.

Lewis then led deputies toward Red Hill Road and onto Sam Potts Highway at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour. In Hallsboro, he turned the truck back toward Whiteville, the report said.

In the city, Lewis turned onto Lee Street, still with deputies and Whiteville Police in pursuit. Officers deployed stop sticks near West Columbus Street, but Lewis kept going for a short distance before the truck stopped.

No one was injured in the chase.
