Life will move a little slower for the start of the week in Columbus County as most schools, businesses, and government offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17.
A tribute march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held today (Jan. 15) at 11 a.m. at the Vineland Station Depot in Whiteville. The ceremonial walk will begin at the station and end at the courthouse. This event is open to everyone.
The Columbus County Youth and Families organization will be having a Virtual Bites cooking contest. Participants can enter the contest by recording themselves making their signature dish and submitting it before Feb. 11. Prizes are $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place, and $25 for honorable mention. The contest will have categories for both youth and adults.
All videos will be loaded to the Columbus County Youth and Families Facebook page for voting from Feb. 11- 25. Three little pigs made quite the stir in the eastern end of Columbus County, but thankfully there was no big bad wolf to contend with. The pigs showed up at the home of Ricky Thomas of Hallsboro Tuesday afternoon, and after a quick snack or two of flower bulbs, the trio took off again back into the woods.
The Faith Soldiers Empowerment Church male youth empowerment program meets every third Sunday after church. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 16 from 12:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m.
The program will have a guest speaker or professional career training at each gathering. New persons will complete an assessment to determine career and personal skills. FSEC will compile a success package for them to have to help motivate them toward their personal and professional goals. The church is located at 5662 Sam Potts Highway, Hallsboro.
The Columbus Baptist Association will be having their Backpack Buddy packing party on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at the CBA office in Whiteville. These packs will be handed out to children in need so that they can have something to eat over the weekend. The more hands available to help out, the lighter the work will be. The Columbus County Animal Advisory Board will have their quarterly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. The event will take place at the Columbus County Animal Shelter located at 288 Legion Drive in Whiteville.
Turkey shoots aren’t just for Thanksgiving. Sandy Plain Baptist church will be hosting a fundraising shoot Friday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m. The church is located at 6824 Swamp Fox Highway East, Tabor City.
