Columbus County has been seeing some frigid temperatures and unusual weather for the South. What better way to beat the chill if you’re stuck inside than to play a little basketball.  

The First Baptist Church of Lake Waccamaw willing be opening their gym from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. for children in grades K-6 to play basketball every Saturday beginning Jan. 22- Feb. 26. The open gym will include snacks and drinks and is free to the public. For more information, call 910.641.7296.

Sign-up for the Columbus County Dixie Youth Softball league are happening right now. Visit www.registration.bluesombrero.com if your child is interested in participating. Registration will be accepted through Feb. 12 for kids ages 4-19 years old. 

Whiteville Dixie Youth baseball registration ends February 25. You may register online via the link on the Wolfpack Optimist Facebook page. Make sure you follow the page to get all the updates on the upcoming season. The fee is $50 per child.

Lake Waccamaw Gators Dixie Youth Baseball sign-ups will be Feb 12, 19 and 26, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. There is a $40 registration fee. Call 910.625.6167 or 910.625.9750 for more.

Southern Columbus Dixie Youth Baseball signups are available online now until February 12. In-Person Signups will be available the next three Saturdays from 9 A.M. until noon at the Tabor City Athletic  Complex, William’s Township Elementary Gym, and Nakina Middle School Gym. The Hearts and Vets Walk-a-thon hosted by the Veteran’s Memorial Park is now virtual due to inclement weather. The county-wide event was scheduled to begin Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. in honor of February’s American Heart month, but it will now run through Feb. 28 at 5 p.m.  

Folks are now asked to log miles from home, at the gym, in the yard, at school and any location available. The fee is $5, and you can register anything during the 31-day challenge.  

Participants are also encouraged to have individuals and local businesses sponsor them for the walk-a-thon to raise money for the park. Awards for different age groups that walk the longest and bring in the most money will be handed out on March 1. 

Whiteville has some exciting news this week. The town was chosen once again to host #CycleNC in October. Over the years, the biking event has brought over 3,000 visitors to the area. The Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will be putting together a committee to work on logistics, entertainment, and marketing. Anyone wishing to participate in some compacity can contact the CCCT at 910.642.3171. 

Members of the Whiteville Fire and Police departments completed a 30-hour training course on how to educate caregivers on installing car seats. The class was hosted by Safe Kids of OSFM. The men and women in red and blue are happy to be able to provide another service to the city.  

The town of Lake Waccamaw has a vacancy for a full-time firefighter position. Applicants must be Firefighter I and II certified and willing to submit to a background check and drug test. They must physically be able to perform duties, be 21 years of age or older, and possess a valid North Carolina Class B driver’s license. Salary will be based on experience. Applications are available at Town Hall located at 205 Flemington Drive.   

Tabor City will be having its first ever “Spring Has Sprung” festival. The event is planned for Saturday, April 23 starting at 9 a.m. Some details are still pending, but the festival will feature crafts, food, vendors, entertainment and even a car show. The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina has a new face around campus. Kelly Coughlin as joined the family to become the organization’s second Therapeutic Recreationalist. Coughlin will be joined by her furry partner, Schall the golden retriever.
