The combined efforts of Whiteville Police and both state and federal agents sent an Asheboro man to prison this week.

Steven Thomas Luck, 47, of Asheboro, was found guilty of trafficking heroin and sentenced to 282 months – 23.5 years – in prison. He was also ordered to pay a $500,000 fine.

Luck was the target of an undercover operation by Whiteville Police, the State Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation in the fall of 2020, District Attorney Jon David said in a press release. Officers made a series of undercover drug deals with Luck.

On Oct. 18, 2020, SBI agents made a deal to purchase 11 ounces of heroin and ten ounces of crystal methamphetamine. When Whiteville Police attempted to make a traffic stop on Luck, he fled in his vehicle. He later bailed from the car and was caught after a manhunt.

Officers found a shoebox with a “large quantity of heroin” in the area where Luck Fled, David said. When his home was searched in Asheboro, the SBI discovered both heroin and meth.

Luck was on federal probation at the time of the arrest.
