An off-center crossroads that has been the scene of multiple car crashes will soon get a major renovation.
Old Lumberton Road at N.C. 410, sometimes called Oakdale Crossroads, will be cut off on the eastern side of N.C. 410, and the western approach straightened, Andrew Barksdale of the N.C. Department of Transportation said. Travelers heading west on Old Lumberton will have to turn right or left.
To ease some of the pressure from the busy intersection, DOT will add a turn lane from N.C. 410 onto Old Lumberton, and add left turn lanes from both directions onto Silver Spoon Road.
Silver Spoon will also see widened lanes and paved shoulders for 1,100 feet between N.C. 410 and Old Lumberton. The intersection of Old Lumberton and Silver Spoon will become a four-way stop.
Old Lumberton at N.C. 410 is unusual because the entrances into the intersection do not match. The changes will straighten some of Old Lumberton where poor visibility has played a role in multiple collisions. The planned improvements will also accommodate commercial truck traffic.
DOT awarded the $835,000 contract to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Rocky Mount. The contractor can begin between April and July; the company then will have three months to complete the improvements.
