The first-ever BOLD & Beautiful Wigs for Cancer Tournament was held at in Ocean Isle Beach at the Links at Brick Landing Golf Course on Feb. 26. Played in a four-person scramble format, the fund-raiser was a resounding success, far exceeding the expectations of its organizers.
For years, BOLD & Beautiful Wigs for Cancer held a gala as their annual fundraiser, but the last few years of COVID restrictions made hosting a sit-down dinner dance difficult.
Marlisa Small, founder of the charity that provides free wigs for cancer patients, was thrilled with the results. “We raised over $13.500 which will help buy wigs for 135 cancer victims. Everyone came out to play, our volunteers were at Brick Landing most of the day, selling chances, answering questions, helping with the tournament. I couldn’t be happier!”
Many local celebrities were there for the tournament including Dreisa Sherrill, Mrs. South Carolina Senior America 2022. Dreisa sang the Star-Spangled Banner before the tournament to a huge round of applause.
“I’ve been singing at events for many years,” she said and it’s an honor to be asked to be part of this wonderful tournament today. I love the game of golf and thoroughly enjoyed the tournament today.”
Dreisa, who lives in North Myrtle Beach, is a retired school teacher and school administrator who helps with several veteran’s associations in the area. She will compete for the National Mrs. Senior America in Hershey, Pennsylvania from Sept. 5-9.
The tournament was attended by many cancer volunteers and survivors. Alisa Nickel and her sister-in-law Karen Nickel were outspoken in the praise of Marlisa and her charity. Alisa has been battling breast cancer and is down to her final six treatments. “God has brought me this far and I’m working as hard as I can to get well. The wig I’m wearing has made a world of difference to how I look and feel.”
The winning teams were: first place – Jimmy Coward, Blake White, Buddy Sharp and Mike Evans; second place – Terry Johnson, David Quick, Walt Maharay, and John Curry; third place – Mike Wolfe, Mel Romanton, Matt Graves, and Ben Wolf.
