Less than four days after two men died in a head-on crash near Bolton, the county’s ninth road death occurred near Chadbourn Sunday.
Josh Eli Thorp, 40, of China Grove Church Road, was killed when he and Heather Pennington were ejected in the crash, First Sgt. Andrew Pait of the Highway Patrol reported.
Thorp was traveling east on China Grove when his 2005 Nissan went off the right shoulder at a high rate of speed, struck a ditch and a culvert, and then hit a utility pole. The car overturned and came to rest in the ditch, Pait said.
The crash was reported at 7:59 p.m.
Pennington was reported in critical condition Monday.
The last previous fatal crash in the county was Thursday morning, when Ryan Patrick Young and John Douglas Suelter were killed in a head-on crash on N.C. 211 near Bolton.
