During the end of April and the first of May, it’s all about nature at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville. The City Nature Challenge begins on April 29 and will run through May 8. The museum is partnering with the NC Aquarium in Fort Fisher to offer virtual instruction on how to participate in the event. The Zoom meeting will focus on how to make your own observations, where to look for species in your area, and how to take a great photo for scientific research. The video conference is scheduled for this Thursday, April 21, at 4 p.m., and those interested can register now at https://tinyurl.com/CNCKickstart.
You can take pictures of nature, help scientists, compete for prizes, and join a global initiative on Saturday, April 30, onsite at the museum. Starting at 10:30 a.m., the public is invited to see how many living things they can document during the Nature Photo Challenge. You can also learn how to submit those pictures to help with scientific research, and some of the photographs picked will win prizes. There will be a limited number of digital cameras available at the challenge, but smartphone images will also be accepted. Spots are limited, so reserve yours now at https://tinyurl.com/CNCPhoto.
On Tuesday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m., the museum will once again join with the aquarium to bring a virtual training session for City Nature Challenge participants who are interested in learning more about their discoveries and observations. The Mystery No More class will be taught by educators and enthusiasts who will show attendees tips to identify an array of creatures and plants in their photographs and all around the area.
