No lights, speed and no helmet led to the death of a motorcycle rider early Saturday, according to the highway Patrol.
Ramel Williams, 19, of Old Lumberton Road, died after his Yamaha motorcycle slammed into the right front of a 2019 Toyota driven by Lesly McCeachin of Raleigh. The driver of the car was backing out of a driveway on Silver Spoon when the crash occurred.
Williams was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the eastbound lane of Silver Spoon Road, First Sgt. Andrew Pait of the Highway Patrol said.
The crash occurred at 1:51 a.m.
A total of 16 people have died in car crashes in Columbus County this year. The last wreck occurred on U.S. 701 in Whiteville when a woman pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle June 20.
