It’s almost Independence Day, and if you’re looking for a way to celebrate, be sure to check out all the events happening this weekend right here in Columbus County.
• The 35th annual Columbus County Fireworks Celebration will be held today, Friday, July 1, at South Columbus High School. Gates open at 6 p.m., and preshow entertainment will begin at 6:45 p.m. Fireworks will be set off at 9:30 p.m. The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce will sell patriotic glow necklaces, food, soft drinks, water and raffle tickets. Old Zion Wesleyan Church youth will have snow cones and popcorn available for purchase.
No coolers, pets, alcohol beverages, or unauthorized vendors are allowed at the event. South Columbus High School is located at 40 Stallion Drive in Tabor City.
• The Delco Senior Youth Activity Center Project will be hosting Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 2, beginning at 12 p.m. The day will include food and games, and will continue with fireworks on July 4. The center is currently seeking vendors for the event.

• Lake Waccamaw Fire and Rescue Department will be holding their annual hotdog sale and boot drop on Saturday, July 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the station. Tickets for a gun raffle on Monday, July 4, at 10 a.m. for a Henry Golden Boy .22 LR “Fireman’s Tribute Edition” will also be for sale at the fundraiser. The cost is $5 each or 4 for $20, and proceeds will go to water rescue equipment for the department.
• The Whiteville Fun Factory will be welcoming families with special needs and sensory restrictions on Saturday, July 2, from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. The day will include arts and crafts, games, and much more. Sensory friendly hours will provide a quiet atmosphere for children with noise and light sensitivity.
Tickets are $10 for children ages 4 years and older, and kids 3 and under get in for $5. The factory is located at 42 Hill Plaza in Whiteville. For more information, call 910.207.6136.
• Western Prong Baptist Church will be having an Independence Day celebration on Sunday, July 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The evening will include ice cream, watermelon, live music, and fireworks at sundown. The church is located at 167 Peacock Road in Whiteville.
• This week, officers from Whiteville Police Department and Columbus County Sheriff’s Office attended Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)Training. CIT programs are jail diversion programs that provide law enforcement officers the knowledge and skills they need to de-escalate persons in crisis. CIT improves communication, identifies mental health resources for those in crisis, and ensures officer and community safety.
• The Southeastern Oratorio Society and the Columbus County Band will perform a free, outdoor, patriotic concert on Sunday, July 3, at 6:00 p.m. on the lakeside hill of the Boys and Girls Home campus. The show will feature local singers and musicians.
• While you’re enjoying the fireworks during the upcoming holiday, don’t forget that your furry companion may not be. Make sure that you have proper I.D. attached to collars in case your pet happens to get outside and run away from the loud noises of the light displays. Have a safe haven set up inside your home that includes blankets, favorite toys, and treats.
Draw the curtains and turn on the TV to help muffle sounds, and give your furbaby any vet-prescribed anxiety medications. Play with and comfort your animal if you see any signs of stress while fireworks are going off. These tips can help both pets and owners cope with firework phobias on Independence Day.
