The Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio has already had a busy summer. With the Yacunne fishing camp and the tribal summer kickoff party under their belt, the organization recently looked to the sea and the sand to bring some hands-on adventures.

On June 28, tribal youth headed out to Masonboro Island to explore deserted beaches and discover ocean wildlife. A boat left from Carolina Marina at Carolina Beach to transport the kids and their chaperons to a four-hour excursion of crabbing, discovering life in saltwater marshes, and of course, finding sea shells.

“The kids and families went out to Masonboro Island to learn about marine life, and they had an amazing time,” said STEM Studio Founder Ashley Lomboy.

The island is located south of Wrightsville Beach, and has been left underdeveloped for the use of education, research, and tradition purposes. The Island and Sound Exploration Day is one of the oldest and most popular programs made possible by the Island Wildlife Cape Fear chapter.

The Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio not only enjoyed their day out, but they were also invited by Island Wildlife to participate in the Carolina Oceans Studies Program along with the Lower Cape Fear YWCA. Through the program, every year over 25,000 children are taken out to barrier islands and ocean reefs for environmental education.

Both the exploration day and the studies program are suitable for children of all ages.
