An iconic wooden bridge in the Green Swamp Gamelands is being replaced.
Work is underway replacing the heavy wooden bridge on Roberts Road off N.C. 211. The new reinforced bridge will be better equipped to handle increased traffic through the nature area. It will still be a single lane crossing, but the new bridge will also have guardrails. The bridge is being built to Department of Transportation standards and will open up more areas of the Gamelands for public access.
The simple bridge has been a landmark for hunters, birdwatchers, equestrians, logging crews and nature lovers for decades. It’s also a popular, if bumpy, shortcut between the Crusoe area and N.C. 211, to those with patience and a knowledge of the back roads.
The bridge is expected to be completed and in service before the start of deer season in October.
