Each summer, the Helms Nature Preserve holds their annual Pioneer Day Camp for children and teenage youth for five days in June. The camp is funded and hosted through the preserve’s developmental program called the Helms Nature Preserve and Resource Education Center, and a local church is raising money for the continuation of the program.
The benefit is called the ‘$100 Dinner,’ and the location of that banquet will be Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. The preserve will offer up 200 tickets for $100 each, and each one entitles the recipient to dinner for two and one entry for a raffle for $1,500. Ten second prize tickets will be drawn for the chance to win $100. Winners do not have to be present to win the prizes.
The dinner is set for tomorrow evening, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be obtained by calling 910.612.2843 or 910.840.1327, or by emailing ncwlahq@embarqmail.com. This event is for adults 18 years old and older. LWMC is located at 506 Lakeshore Drive in Lake Waccamaw.
The Helms Preserve Pioneer Day Camp offers a variety of recreation and activities. These include canoeing, archery, target shooting, gun safety training, fishing, crafts, science demonstrations, and classes about protecting endangered turtles and raptors.
