Sometimes safety devices can actually become hazards.
Lake Waccamaw has multiple poles marking No Wake and safety zones around much of the lake. Lightning strikes, boat collisions, and age can cause the poles to break, shift or even float away, become boating hazards, especially to boaters who aren’t familiar with the lake.
Since the state park manages the lake, park personnel spend some time repairing and replacing the poles every summer. Park staff also keeps an eye on private buoys, and those that are not marked with the owner’s name and phone number are subject to removal.
If you see a broken or damaged pole, or other hazard, call the park office at 910.646.4748 and report the pole’s location. Staff will evaluate the hazard, and make repairs when necessary.
