Tyquise Baker will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Baker was found guilty Sept. 8 of killing Julius Miller and a woman at 545 Dessie Road in 2021. He was sentenced to life plus 33 to 52 months in prison for first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
District Attorney Jon David said in a press release that witnesses described Baker shooting Miller and the woman multiple times. Baker continued shooting Miller after he had fallen to the ground, according to testimony. The woman who witnessed the killing was then shot repeatedly, but managed to escape and seek medical attention.
Investigators found “more than 10” 9mm casings around Miller’s body. He had 16 entry and re-entry wounds.
The Dessie Road home was condemned and destroyed after then-Sheriff Jody Greene and David sought a nuisance order against the property. The ramshackle structure had been the scene of several homicides as well as multiple 911 calls about drug activity and violence.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Allan Adams and ADA Courtney Sanford represented the state, with the assistance of Legal Assistant Jason Britt. Sgt. Jeremy Barber of the sheriff’s office was lead investigator.
The home at 545 Dessie Road was popular with criminal suspects offered easy routes of escape into Chadbourn and heading into the county, according to investigators familiar with the property. Just weeks after the Miller shooting, Vice-Narcotics Agents raided the property and made arrests for narcotics and stolen firearms.
