If anyone tells you there’s nothing going on Columbus County, they’re just not keeping up.

This weekend there’s music, classic cars, a special worship service and beautiful weather.

Saturday starting at 11 is the inaugural Madison Street Music Festival in downtown Whiteville. North tower, the Embers and the Blackwater band will take to the stage starting at 1 p.m. You can enjoy food trucks, dancing, and specials at a number of downtown businesses. Tickets are $20 for the event. Dancing shoes and softsided coolers are welcome, but not glass bottles are allowed.

Are classic cars more your speed? Then head out to the Farmers Market on Government Complex Drive Saturday starting at 9 a.m. There’s a car show that’s free for both visitors and exhibitors. The market is open until 1 p.m. every Saturday, and vendors of arts, crafts, produce and more are encouraged to reserve a space.

Also on Saturday, the Waccamaw Youth Circle and Chief Mike Jacobs will host “The Making of a canoe” at the tribal grounds in Buckhead starting at 5 p.m.

Milk Before Meat Ministries will sponsor a night of praise and worship. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Park, 6354 James B. White Highway South of Whiteville. Admission is free. Concessions will be available. The worship service will feature music and speakers from a number of area churches. The service starts at 5 p.m.

Tabor City will be having a community yard sale on Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Garrell Depot located 105 Railroad Street. Local folks will be selling gently used items while Tabor City Fire Department will be selling hot dog or chilli burger combos with chips and drinks. Contact Jeff Fowler or Josh Ward at 910.653.4100 or  Tammie Keyes at 828.777.6208. A $15 dollar space fee is required at the time of registration, and you can sign up through Oct. 4.

The town of Fair Bluff will be having their community market every first Saturday of the month, but visitors and shoppers are asked to avoid the main entrance to the Riverwalk at the moment. During the hurricane last week, a tree fell on the walkway. Town officials are working hard to get the tree cleared and the Riverwalk fixed, but those who would like to still enjoy the sights are asked to use the boat ramp entrance instead. The next market is scheduled for Oct. 7.

Lake Waccamaw Killifish (N.C. State Parks)

Lake Waccamaw State Park this week announced that a recent survey by the Wildlife Resources Commission turned up healthy populations of Waccamaw Killifish, Silversides and Darters. The three fish are found nowhere else in the world except Lake Waccamaw.
