Firefighters in Riegelwood expected to be deployed on submerged vehicles and swift water rescue calls during Hurricane Idalia, so when they were dispatched to a report of a submerged truck Thursday, it was no surprise.

What was a surprise was that the truck was not a victim of Idalia – it had apparently been sunk in the creek for an extended period of time, possible even years.

Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Rescue Chief Steve Camlin said Swift Water Rescue Technician Adam Coleman went into the fast-moving water and attached chains to the truck, after ensuring no one was inside.

“After pulling the truck to the bank using winches off the rescue trucks,” Camlin said, “It was determined that the vehicle had been there for some years.”

Floodwaters from Idalia apparently dislodged the truck from its watery resting place, Camlin said.
