Students got an unscheduled break from class Monday morning after a bomb threat was emailed to the city school system.
The threat was made around 1030 a.m. The sheriff’s office reported that students at all four city schools were evacuated as a precautionary measure while deputies searched for a possible explosive device. No evidence of a threat was found, the sheriff’s office reported.
The bomb threat was similar to electronic threats that disrupted a number of schools last year.
“Someone sent an email to school districts across the state,” Superintendent Jonathan Williams said “The email contained a threat to all schools. We called law enforcement and evacuated our buildings while they checked them out. It took around one hour to evacuate the building and return back to normal schedule.”
Making terroristic threats against a school is a felony in North Carolina.
The investigation is continuing.
