Lake Waccamaw held their last 2023 meeting of the year on Tuesday evening. Commissioners Terry Littrell and Karl Bracey were sworn in after their victory at the polls, and the long-awaited bike and pedestrian plan was adopted by town leaders. Smaller items on the agenda were tabled until January including a discussion about light usage at the ballfield and tennis courts at Elizabeth Brinkley Park and the decision about accruing a 401K plan for town employees. The board agreed to approach the topics again in the new year when more information can be obtained.
Terry Littrell and Karl Bracey have officially taken their oath of office to serve another term on the board for Lake Waccamaw. Both commissioners kept their seats after residents cast their votes at elections last month. Town Lawyer Scott Sessions had the honor of swearing in the gentlemen.
The bike and pedestrian plan that’s been in the works over the last two years in the area is finally coming together for the Lake. The N. C. Department of Transportation granted the town $45,000 for the plan in November of 2021. The purpose of the project was to collect data that will help to determine where walking and bike lanes should be placed throughout the municipality, and Lake Waccamaw has been working diligently with the Cape Fear Council of Governments to bring the proposal to life.
Town leaders did agree to move forward with the bike and pedestrian plan, but they will do so carefully and as the budget for the upcoming year will allow.
“Anything that we choose to adopt should be put through the budget for next year,” said Littrell who mirrored Town Manager Damen Kempski’s concerns about prioritizing recommendations when presenting the plan.
