The Good News for Dec. 8

Saturday is parade day in Fair Bluff and Riegelwood.

Riegelwood’s Christmas in the Village is from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., with a parade at 5 p.m. and the tree lighting at 6. The festival will end with fireworks. Most of the activities will be at 305 Hwy. 87, downtown.

Fair Bluff’s big Christmas celebration is Saturday as well. The town market will be open from noon to 5, and Santa Claus will be available for photos at the visitors center from 3-5 p.m., when he throws the switch on the town’s Christmas tree before the parade at 6 p.m.

The Columbus County Farmers Market will be open from 9 until 1 Saturday. In addition to the usual produce and craft vendors, there will be a number of sellers specializing in unique Christmas gifts and décor. There will be activities for the kids and even a car show. The market is located on Government Complex Road, Whiteville.

Saturday is this year’s last Youth Turkey Shoot at Old Dock Cypress Creek fire department. Kids 13 and under shoot for free in sponsored rounds starting at 5 p.m. The fire department is located at 10635 New Britton Highway South of Whiteville.

The Men and Women United or Youth and Families will hold their Ambassador diner Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at the Ransom Activities Center in Sandyfield. Awards will be handed out and the past year’s activities reviewed. Parents are asked to bring a new unwrapped toy for the toy drive. The center is located on general Howe Road.

Cerro Gordo Fire Department will be hosting its annual Christmas celebration Sunday at 2 p.m. There will be gift bags for the kids, fire truck rides and time with Santa. The event is free.

THE REAL WHITEVILLE SANTA has opened his house on Smith Street beside Farm Bureau, near the courthouse. Santa is accepting visitors Wednesday through Saturday, 3:30 until 7 p.m., through December 23. Whiteville, Lake Waccamaw, Chadbourn and Tabor City outdid themselves this year with their Christmas parades. Whether folks are happy to put the pandemic behind them, or just have a lot of pentup Christmas cheer, there have been more entries and larger crowds at each parade so far this year than in recent memory. It’s good to see our communities coming together and celebrating this special time.

The Lake Waccamaw Beautification Committee is thinking about Christmas next year. They will be collecting donations on Flemington Drive Saturday starting at 10 a.m. All donations go to new decorations for the town.

Whiteville United Methodist Church will hold a huge yard sale from 7 until noon December 16 in the fellowship hall. The church is located at 902 Pinkney Street.

Work is underway for the first Hallsboro Community Christmas December 23. There will be storytelling, hot chocolate and more. Churches, soloists, and bands are welcome to participate in the singalong. Volunteers are needed to help with baking cookies and decorating. There are ample opportunities to help make Christmas a little brighter for those in need. Families First is offering assistance to clients aided by the agency this year. You can sponsor a child or a family. Call 910.642.5996. Individuals and businesses are welcome.

Whiteville City Schools has a few angels left on the tree to be claimed. Drop by WCS Central Services at107 W Walter St. Whiteville during regular business hours. Please remember gifts are due back by Dec. 13th.
