Kaiden Powell, 16, died when a 2009 Cadillac crashed on Sunset Drive around noon Friday. His brother Kainen Powell is in critical condition in Novant New Hanover. Joshua Lacewell and Kamari Smith are also recovering from injuries.

The northbound car went out of control while passing another vehicle on Sunset Road, went off the roadway and struck a ditch, according to the Highway Patrol. Three of the teens were ejected and one was partially thrown from the vehicle as it overturned.

The teens were remembered in a moment of silence Saturday during the WHS graduation ceremony. All four played JV football, with the Powell brothers reportedly planning to join the varsity team this fall.

“We unite in prayer for these families,” Superintendent Jonathan Williams said Friday. “I am not aware of all details at this point, but are hearts are so heavy.”

The service is set for 8 p.m. on the WHS campus on Lee Street in Whiteville.
